Finding and Applying for US Clinical Electives

Document Checklist

  • Updated CV/Resume
  • Statement of Purpose (Personal Statement)
  • Letter(s) of Recommendation (LOR) from home institution
  • Official Transcript
  • Proof of English Proficiency (e.g., TOEFL)
  • Immunization Records (including TB test)
  • Proof of Malpractice and Health Insurance
  • USMLE Step 1 Score Report (if available)

Application Platforms

The two main pathways are through the AAMC's Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program, if your school is a participating member, or by applying directly to hospitals that accept international students. Direct applications often require more individual research.

Popular Specialties for IMGs

Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry are often more accessible for elective opportunities and provide excellent exposure to the US healthcare system.
